Perhaps crossing an axis, we go to the other side of Jacob, who is still supine, waiting for the promised land (or at least a subway to the West Bank of the River Jordan). He may only be stunned, or he may be permanently stunted by this near-death experience. All that I can say is that, looking forward through the haze of narrative time, I cannot see his face again. His veil-stuck visage now becomes invisible to itself.
