In that empty space, patterns of dancing hexagons appear, in coherent collapsing and expanding patterns, first complete in the form of a solid pill, then in a multi-hex dance articulated through restricted space. The clock of the hive is regular, and has no gears. Every separate moment has a separate shape. This, however, is the continually repeating shape of a single moment. Jacob's lids click as he stares, and his heart repeats a single beat over and over, without echo.
