The cave is made of patches of stone, glued together by starch, kept colored by artificial light and the paying stares of the other tourists (where are they now?). Jacob feels all this residue (almost able to make sense of one sound fragment we can't here, the voice of an announcer at a Redskins game, somehow still reverberating here in the cave ether).
