Jacob looks out. He's high enough to see over most of the sand humps, and so feels that he can tell if anyone or anything is following him, trying to sneak up and steal his shoes, test his edible blood, use radioactively devices close up to check for tooth decay or other problems that would decrease his Blue Book value. Good thing he's watching, because there is a certain amount of danger here.
